Windermere Water Quality

With our waterways, whether river, lake or sea, under constant scrutiny no doubt many of you will have wondered at times about the quality of the bathing water in Windermere. It has received a lot of bad press for the way that local waste water facilities have been handled by the utility company responsible for water treatment in the South Lakes area.
The water in Windermere is sampled at four locations, and all have consistently tested as excellent, see the Environment Agency chart below.

To see 3 star ratings year in year out is reassuring; after all many of our UK waterways will be below that, incl hundreds of miles of rivers and coastlines, as well as many land-locked bodies of water such as Windermere. The majority of sites within the Lake District National Park are deemed excellent, and Windermere is no exception to that.

BLUE-GREEN ALGAE

Windermere has also received a lot of media attention in recent years over reports of blue-green algae, and with good reason, it is something to be cautious of as it can make people sick. It doesn't mean that Windermere as a whole needs to be avoided, but a little knowledge about it can make all the difference.
So, what is it, where is it, and how worried do we need to be?
